Lady Gaga, Eye of the Tiger and Katie Perry songs buzzed throughout the Waynesville High School gymnasium, before the varsity boys basketball game.
“We play all different kinds of music oldies, modern pop, rock and roll,” said WHS band director Jim Stockmann.
Each year, Stockmann buys new music for the pep band. He said talking to area band directors and getting a feel for what their students like, helps him pick music to fit the style.
The WHS Pep Band plays a variety of songs and many more during the basketball games and pep rallies to show their support, to support the athletic program and to raise school spirit.
Band directors Stockmann and Jared Sabatasso encourage their students to get out there and have fun.
“The pep band is purely voluntary,” said Stockmann.
“I use it as a teaching tool to help the kids become stronger and more confident individual musicians and to play in a different band setting.”
“The pep band has been in existence for the past 19 years,” said Stockmann. “As long as I have been teaching in Waynesville.”
There is anywhere from 25-40 students to show up for each game that the pep band will play at; the band plays for all of the boys and girls home basketball game.
When Stockmann was asked what is the difference between the pep band and the marching band he grinned and said, “the marching band and pep band are two different ensembles.”
“Marching band is in the fall and performs for the football games and parades; we perform at the basketball games and pep rallies.”
Stockmann was proud to announce that in 2009, the pep band auditioned and was selected to play at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Basketball games in Columbia.
