With more depth…and more talent…the Waynesville High School girls’ golf team expects to make big strides in this, the Lady Tigers’ second season of competition.
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to open the season today in the Osage Open at Dogwood Hills Golf Course.
WHS was short on numbers in its inaugural girls’ golf season in 2007. This year the numbers have gotten better. Lady Tiger coach Bob Holland has 11 players on the roster this fall.
“We’re going to be stronger as a team,” Holland said. “Our team scores will be lower. We just need to get better chipping and in our short game. If we improve in those things we could be tough at the end of the season.
“We can’t afford to have those four-putts. But I’m excited about our chances. I’d love to take one or two players to state.”
A newcomer to the team, senior April Dowell, has made a big impression so far in the preseason. She joins senior Christina Jennings – last year’s No. 1 player – junior Jorgie Dacamara and sophomore Kristin Pryor as the Lady Tigers top four players.
Also battling for varsity positions include sophomores Natalia Reyes and Tori Dacamara.
Rounding out the roster includes freshman Casandra Hibbert, sophomore transfer Autumn Marie Moore, sophomore Merce’das Morgan, junior Tianna Termon and sophomore Symphony Campbell.
“The kids are working a lot harder than we did last year,” Holland said. “April Dowell changes our whole look as a team. She’ll get better as the season goes on. She’s a competitor and that will rise the competition around her on the team.”
