Lloyd Arthur Burgess, of Dixon, was born on June 15, 1932, at Crocker, a son of Herbert Hadley and Irene Belle (Davis) Burgess, and departed this life at 6:20 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in the Maries Manor Care Center, Vienna. Lloyd had been in failing health for some time and had attained the age of 79 years, 8 months and 12 days.
Lloyd was united in marriage on April 24, 1950, at Dixon, to Bonnie Mae Copeland, and to this union, three children were born. He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 12, 2004; one son, Michael Lloyd Burgess on Feb. 20, 2009; his father; his mother and one brother, Joe Burgess.
Lloyd and Bonnie loved the Lord and were faithful in attending church and taking their children as they grew up. Lloyd loved to praise and worship God, and at the time of his passing, was attending Sheppard Baptist Church, near Dixon. He had worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal service at Fort Leonard Wood for 38 years retiring in 1988. Lloyd’s favorite job after retiring from the post office was “driving Miss Bonnie!”
Lloyd was an avid baseball player, basketball player and hunter. He played town team ball with his dad, Herb, and brothers, Frank and Joe, and for the Jefferson City Jays team for many years. Lloyd took a swing in the minor leagues playing the position of catcher, for both the Giants and the Cincinnati Reds, with a batting average of 415. He loved the ballpark and lived just beyond left field where many of his home run balls landed.
During his life, Lloyd had coached for the Rolla Optimist Club, refereed and umpired games in the Dixon area and enjoyed playing golf for the past several years. He especially enjoyed bird hunting, lovingly caring for his bird dogs and being able to share many a mess of Quail with his friends in the community.
Those left to mourn the passing of Lloyd include: one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Julie Burgess, St. James; one daughter, Lisa Sims, Rolla; one brother, Frank Burgess, Banning, California; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted for Lloyd at 11 a.m., on Friday morning, March 2, 2012, in the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with the Rev. David Vanzant, pastor of Sheppard Baptist Church near Dixon, officiating. Two vocal selections by Alan Jackson, “I Want To Stroll Over Heaven With You” and “How Great Thou Art” were played for the service.
Interment was in the Dixon Cemetery under the direction of the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Pallbearers for Lloyd were Tommy Burgess, Ryan Sims, Jason Durbin, Cale Burgess, Casey Simmons and Robert Burgess.
Memorial contributions are suggested by Lloyd’s family to the Dixon Youth Recreational Association (DYRA) with envelopes available at the Dixon Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
