SFC (Ret) Elmer J. Myers, son of the late William W. and Ora E. (Long) Myers, was born November 8, 1926 in Steubenville, Ohio.  He graduated from Wintersville High School and also continued his education after joining the United States Army.
Elmer entered the United States Army and served his country faithfully for twenty-six years until his honorable discharge on May 1, 1976.  He had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class and was awarded several medals and commendations; some of which include: Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Expert (M-1 Rifle), and Expert (Carbine).  One of his tours was spent in Germany where he worked in electronics for the military.  
On November 3, 1965, Elmer was united in marriage with the love of his life, Elfriede Cotie in Huntsville, Alabama at the Red Stone Arsenal Military Base.  They shared over 46 years of marriage together and many wonderful memories.  
After retiring from the military, Elmer and his family settled in the St. Robert area.  He enjoyed going for walks, reading, doing crossword puzzles and collecting coins.  His biggest enjoyment was talking about the good old days.  He loved to tell stories and visit with his family and friends.  He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  
Elmer passed away at 2:28 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012 in the Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri having attained the age of eighty-five years, six months and four days.  He will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Elmer leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elfriede Myers of the home; five children: Cheryl Erickson of the state of Wisconsin, Karen Teague and Lori Bryan, both of the state of Ohio, Anja Balerio of Waynesville and Michael Myers of St. Robert; one brother: Lloyd Myers of the state of Ohio; six grandchildren: Cameron, Niki, Dennis, Frankie, Jeffrey and Brian; several great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by four brothers: his twin Ed, and Charlie, Robert and William; and three sisters: Flo, Marie and Virginia.
Funeral services with military honors were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Chaplain (CPT) Dustin Rodriguez officiating.  Elmer’s daughter Anja Balerio, son Michael Myers and grandson Cameron Rogers, all recalled their wonderful memories of Elmer.  Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery – Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Missouri.
