  • The effort to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned horses continues to be a challenge for Connie Hendrix and other volunteers as the drought continues and as hay supplies continue to shrink.
Two fundraisers are planned by the Forget-Me-Not Horse Rescue Sanctuary in hopes of raising money to buy hay, which not only is in short supply but is costing more because of demand.
Hendrix founded the horse rescue effort a couple of years ago, and the response has been overwhelming. Her farmstead near Linn Creek has become the new home for many horses whose owners have either abandoned them or who no longer can care for them.
She’s thankful that her supplier set aside extra hay for the special needs horses, but news reports indicate many suppliers are selling their winter supply now. Her supply of hay is adequate now, but if the drought continues and farmers are unable to make another cutting, that will change by fall.
