  • The Waynesville high school boys' soccer team started defense of their Ozark Conference title in good fashion on Tuesday night, defeating Springfield Hillcrest 5-1.
Senior back Lucas Cressler scored four goals for the Tigers and Waynesville was able to control the tempo of the game and keep Hillcrest off balance all night long.
Cressler scored his first goal of the game just five minutes into the game. At the 21:23 mark Cressler would head in a corner kick to give Waynesville a 2-0 lead and that is where the game would stand at halftime.
Senior mid-fielder Steven Jimenez scored just 51 seconds into the second half to give Waynesville a 3-0 lead but Hillcrest would cut the score to 3-1 just 13 minutes later when the Hornets would find the back of the net.
The rest of the game belonged to Cressler as he would complete the hat trick with 8:01 to go in the game and then add his final goal with 2:54 to go, to give Waynesville the 5-1 victory.
With the four goals, Cressler tied a school record for most goals in a game, that has been accomplished six other times. The last time this feat was accomplished was in 2009 by Mark Ward, also against Hillcrest.
Waynesville had 23 shots, nine on goal, with seven corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Lajas Zadravecz collected four saves in the win. Waynesville will next play at Joplin on September 4.
