The Iberia High School girls' softball team bounced back nicely from their second round loss to Dixon to beat Newburg 9-3 and finished third in the Frisco League Softball Tournament.

“It was a tough game, we took a hard loss the other night against Dixon and we had the remnants of Dixon tonight,” said Iberia head coach Lisa Law. “We couldn't get our bats going and we couldn't play defense and sometimes you just have to overcome those things.”

Iberia got on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning but Newburg fired back and scored a run in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead.

Iberia got their bats going and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead by the end of the fourth inning and never looked back. Iberia scored three more runs in the fifth and was leading 9-2 after five innings of play.

An error in the sixth gave Newburg another run but that would be the last run they would get, as freshman pitcher Jordan Lawson shut them down in the seventh for the 9-3 Iberia victory.

“I was happy with our hits tonight, I think we put 13 on the board,” said Law. “Our defense is a little shaky and I would like to get that improved.”

Lawson went the distance pitching seven innings, allowing three runs (zero earned) and six hits, while walking one and striking out six. Lawson also had a double and two RBIs.

Iberia's next game is Sept. 4 at home against Newburg.
