The Laquey High School softball team defeated the Stoutland Lady Tigers 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon to claim the consolation plaque in the Frisco League Tournament.

Going into the game Laquey head coach Bernard Dyl was concerned about the Hornets defense and knew it would take a great defensive effort to win the game.

“I told the girls they could win it, they just have to play defense,” said Dyl. “Defense is our albatross right now and I told the girls if you can keep your errors down to three you have a solid chance to win the ballgame.”

Laquey kept the errors down and the bats going, as the Hornet only committed two errors but banged out 17 hits.

“The girls are pretty good at what they do, they just get excited and they don't focus but tonight they did,” said Dyl. “They hit the ball good and I can't complain about that.”

Laquey was facing a 3-0 deficit going into the bottom of the first inning but the Hornets came right back and put six on the board to erase that and take a 6-3 lead going into the second inning.

The Hornets would add three more in the second, one in the third, score five in the fifth and win the game when senior shortstop McKayla McCart took off on a delayed steal of third and scored the final run of the game when the Stoutland catcher over-threw third base.

Sophomore catcher Leigha Edwards had three hits in the game and drove in two runs. Senior outfielder Jerrica Leonard had two hits and two RBIs.

Laquey will next play at home against Climax Springs on September 4.
