  • Three long field goals in favor of Joplin ended in Waynesville's demise a week ago, and it didn't help that the team accumulated five turnovers either.
"It all came down to turnovers," coach Rick Vernon said.
Waynesville turned the ball over four times in its own territory – an interception and a fumble on offense, and twice on special teams fumbles.
Last week was the past in Vernon's eyes and he expects his team to play with added discipline this week against Ozark Conference rival Camdenton.
To decrease the likelihood of negative diversification, Vernon's team spends each practice working to correct mistakes in all facets of the game. Wednesday's practice was no different except for an added focus on defense.
"Camdenton is a very basic offenseive team," Vernon said. "We're working on rallying to the ball and trying to spill the ball inside because [Camdenton] does things very well, and if you don't get on them very quick, they're going to hurt you."
In the past, Camdenton has utilized the swinging gate offensive scheme to thwart Waynesville's pesky defense. Vernon practiced against the situation to prepare for any surprises Friday.
"Over the years they've had that so you have to get your new guys adjusted to it and be ready," Vernon said.
The overall focus of the week's practices: stop Camdenton's rushing attack.
"I expect to stop their running game," Vernon said in simple fashion.
The tenured coach also said he's expecting Waynesville to get its offense off to a running start early in the game.
With an overall record of 3-3, Camdenton leads Waynesville (2-4) in the Ozark Conference by a single game. Each team has played similar opponents and achieved similar results, except for Camdenton's 25-7 win over Kickapoo – Waynesville lost to the same team 21-6 in August.
Both teams are in the middle of the pack in the Ozark Confrence. Camdenton's home record, however, is a lousy 0-2. Instead, the team has enjoyed opposing crowds, winning three-of-four games on the road.
At home, Waynesville has split wins and losses, going 2-2, but has not won a game on the road this year. The Waynesville team would like to change that Friday.
