Resiliency continued for the Waynesville softball team Thursday.
Down 3-0 to a tough Willard team in bottom of the sixth inning, Waynesville put together a string of hits to rally back and tie the game at three. Even behind the arm of junior pitcher Marena Coonrod, seven innings weren't enough. Coonrod held Willard scoreless in the top of the eighth to give her team the chance to win, yet again, in walk-off fashion.
With runners on, senior Lesley Larson stepped to the plate and pounded a base hit through the infield for the game-winning RBI. Waynesville won 4-3.
Coonrod pitched in all eight innings and allowed only two earned runs and seven hits, and struck out three.
In the low scoring affair, Larson led the way at the plate, hitting two-for-four with two singles and two RBIs. Four other Waynesville players recorded hits.
The victory advanced Waynesville to its first ever District Championship game, which will be played Monday at 5 p.m. in Rolla against the host team.
