  • Lake view: Re-election of Obama not the end of the world

    • email print
  • After I read the comments Irene Garcia made about the re-election of President Obama I started thinking about how I felt when Reagan was elected.  Some of the same thoughts crossed my mind in regards to how my quality of living was going to be impacted and how much money I would have to live on when he did the Tax Reform Act of 1986.
The phrase "trickle down economics" was used to describe the idea that if corporations had to pay less tax and could make more profit the increased revenue would trickle down through to even the poor.
I did see much higher taxes.  And the wealthy did make much more money.  The national debt went from $997 billion to $2.8 trillion.
The national debt also went from 26% of GDP in 1980 to 41% in 1988.  Spending was 20% of GDP in 1971 to over 22% of GDP.
Instead of being a lender nation, we became a debtor nation.
I don't think God is behind Sandy hitting the East coast right before the election, and if it's a warning to humanity, it's more along the line of quit abusing the limited resources of the planet.
When it comes to the healthcare bill ,called by many people Obamacare: if you have insurance you keep what you have and because of exchanges people who can't afford it will be able to.
Maybe some employers will have to offer insurance to people who normally wouldn't have gotten it.
That is probably why some of them have decided to downsize their work force.
In case you hadn't realized it, insurance companies are for profit and answer to stockholders so they will do whatever it takes to make a profit, that is why out of pocket costs have risen over the last few years.
As far as this being a communist nation, it would be hard to imagine given that everyone was able to vote for anyone freely, and no one came to your door to take you away because of who you voted for.
There will be things that the President will do that people don't like, but there may be some things that turn out to make life better.  Besides, there is always 2016.
