With the help of several organizations and families in the community, High 5 Development Corporation provided Thanksgiving meals for 73 local families on Tuesday night.
Event planner Marcella Nelson said that she estimates they have raised over $1,000 in cash donations, and hundreds of dollars in food donations as well.
“We realize that there are so many in need out there and we just look at it as a way to give back to the community,” Nelson said. “ Sometimes people don't like to say that they need something, but then come out of their shell when they hear of organizations like this doing things to help them. We really look at it as a way to give back to the community. “
More than 21 of local organizations and 18 families donated food and money for this event.
“This shows that we can come together when there is a need. It shows there are people out there with a helping heart that wants to help others who have less than they do,” Nelson said. “It's exciting to know that we have reached at least one family and provided that Thanksgiving meal to a family that may not be able to have it. “
