An early-morning traffic crash Saturday resulted in the deaths of two St. James teens, bringing the number of traffic fatalities up to 39 in the Troop I area of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2012.
The accident also seriously injured a St. James man.
Alexa M. Bartlett, 18, and Nikki L. Stanley, 17, both were killed in the crash, which happened around 12:30 a.m. Dec. 15 when Stanley apparently lost control of a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt that she was driving and ran off the right side of eastbound Interstate 44 at mile marker 188.6 in Rolla.
The vehicle then struck several trees and overturned. Stanley and Bartlett were both ejected.
The other passenger, 21-year-old Cory S. Rose, of St. James, suffered serious injuries.
He was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center shortly after the incident.
At the time of this report, his condition was not available.
According to the highway patrol incident report, both Stanleyand Bartlett were pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones.
None of the three individuals were wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported. The vehicle was totaled.
A funeral service for Stanley will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
Interment will follow in the Kenner Cemetery near Dixon.
A visitation for family and friends of Stanley will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home
Arrangements for Bartlett are being handled by Jones Funeral Home in St. James.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, followed by a funeral service Friday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial service for Bartlett and Stanley was held Sunday afternoon at John F. Hodge High School in St. James.
The high school was open Saturday for any student or community member to talk to a counselor.
