  • A heartbreaking Monday loss to Farmington, 53-51, pushed the Waynesville girls basketball team into a Wednesday match-up with Cuba in the Sullivan Tournament's consolation bracket.
Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, a strong defensive first half turned around in Wednesday's third quarter. Cuba strung together a 17-point surge to tie the game at 34-all at the sound of the period's buzzer.
In the final stanza Cuba used its generated momentum to outscore Waynesville 13-9 and steal a 47-43 win.
"We didn't talk on defense and didn't attack offensively," Waynesville coach Brittany Matlock said. "Cuba wanted it more than we did and out played us on both ends. We had opportunities but didn't convert them."
In its final game at the Sullivan Tournament, Waynesville will take on University City (1-7, MaxPreps.com) on Friday at 4 p.m.
University City has tallied a mere 38 points in its last two contests, both losses. Waynesville's next opponent has been outscored by 70 combined points in those two games.
Despite a .125 win percent, University City has displayed its ability to defend. In a Dec. 12 match-up with Madison College Prep, the school allowed its opponent to 7 total points.
"University City has nothing to lose," Matlock said. "They are athletic and hungry for a win."
Waynesville's previous two losses came by a combined 6 points, which show strides the Lady Tigers have made since beginning the season with four consecutive losses.
"We must show up and play four quarters together," Matlock said, and added that's what it will take to leave the Sullivan Tournament with the squad's third overall win.
