RICHLAND – The Newburg High School boys' basketball team captured the consolation finals of the Richland Tournament by beating Crocker 42-39 on Saturday.
Newburg, now 9-3, took a 13-7 lead after the first period and then outscored the Crocker Lions 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 edge into intermission.
The Wolves held a 37-25 advantage going into the fourth quarter and then held off a Lions rally. Crocker outscored Newburg 14-5 in the final period.
Freshman guard Ryan Ward paced Newburg with 14 points while junior guard Alan Yelton added eight.
Justin Sloan, a 6-1 junior, netted 12 points and sophomore Austin Bogle added 10 for Crocker.
Earlier in the tournament Newburg lost to host Richland 77-44 in the first round on Thursday, Dec. 27 and then defeated Laquey 49-42 on Friday, Dec. 28 in consolation action.
Against Laquey on Friday the Wolves bolted to a 14-4 lead after the first period and led 27-16 at intermission. The Laquey Hornets outscored Newburg 12-4 in the third period to cut their deficit to 31-28 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Wolves held on with an 18-point fourth period.
Ward fired in 16 points and senior Dylan Sickler added 15 points for Newburg.
Brendan Bowling, a 6-3 senior, scored 16 points to lead Laquey.
The Wolves are scheduled to play at Bunker in non-conference play on Friday.
