Licking lashes Laquey girls in Frisco play
- Take away one quarter and the Lady Hornets would have been victorious over a talented Licking team on Tuesday night.
Take away one quarter and the Lady Hornets would have been victorious over a talented Licking team on Tuesday night.
Instead, a resilient opponent, Licking battled back from a one-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat Laquey, 40-39.
Laquey opened fast with a 15-11 first quarter showing, but never seemed to fully gain momentum.
"We were able to get up by 5 multiple times," Lady Hornets coach Wesley Shaw said, "but the Wildcats responded and we could never get above 5."
In the second quarter, Licking's defense improved and held Laquey to a mere 8 points to pull within 1 point at the half, 23-22.
That pesky Lady Wildcats defense grew stronger as the clock wound down. Licking eventually earned its first lead of the half, but Laquey hung around.
Shaw said Tuesday night's contest "was a good defensive battle between both teams."
Unfortunately for Laquey, their opponent's third quarter lead was all it took to edge its Frisco Conference opponent as Licking edged the Lady Hornets 40-39.
Although Laquey had a "poor shooting night from the field," Shaw said his team's defense kept them in the game.
However, it was Licking's size – five players of 5-foot-9 or taller – that helped earn the win.
"Licking did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and their size and defense bothered our shooting," Shaw said.
Scoring summary: Laquey – McKayla McCart, sr., 12 points; Maura Skidmore, jr., 12; Danielle Graves, jr., 8; Brittni Click, sr., 3; Harley Gan, jr., 2; Shelby Wilson, fr., 2.
