ROLLA - Hounding Rolla into 28 turnovers, the Waynesville High School girls' basketball team kept its Ozark Conference record perfect on Monday, posting a 55-40 road victory.
Waynesville improves to 9-9 overall and 3-0 in the league. Rolla lost its fifth consecutive game to fall to 8-10 and 1-2.
As sloppy as Rolla played, the home team still had a chance entering the fourth period, trailing by just seven points. However, the Lady Tigers put together a 19-point fourth period – led by 10 points from freshman forward Kallie Bildner – to pull away.
Waynesville scored the game's first six points and never trailed.
RHS senior forward Andrea Zalis canned a three-point field goal with :32 left in the first period to cut the Lady Tiger lead to one, 14-13. However, Bildner's putback to end the first-quarter scoring began a 8-0 Lady Tiger run. And a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Chelsey Howser with 6:38 left in the second period gave WHS a 22-13 advantage.
The largest Lady Tiger advantage of the first half came at the 1:33 mark, when junior forward Jordan Laughlin drilled a three-pointer off the right baseline to make it 31-21.
Rolla trailed 32-25 at halftime.
Neither team did much in the third period, splitting eight points.
The Lady Tigers went on a 15-7 run to open the final period. Junior forward Hannah Bland hit both ends of one-and-one free throw attempts at the 3:00 mark to up the Waynesville edge to 15, 51-36. Rolla would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Bildner netted 20 points and Bland added 12 for the Lady Tigers.
Zalis had exactly half of Rolla's scoring output – 20 points – including three 3-pointers.
In the junior varsity game sophomore forward Brianna Williams hit both ends of one-and-one free throws with :04 remaining to give Waynesville a 35-33 victory.
With 16 seconds left in the jayvee game Waynesville sophomore guard Camia Blash hit a shot in the lane while being fouled to tie the score 33-33. She missed the free throw but Waynesville got the rebound and called timeout. After the inbounds play Williams was fouled, setting up the game-winning free throws.
Rolla freshman Caroline Victor missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Blash finished with 15 points for the Waynesville jayvee squad, now 3-9. Junior guard Sydney Eyberg had 10 points and Victor added nine for the Rolla jayvee squad, now 4-10.
