  • The mission of JROTC – the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps – is to motivate young people to be better citizens. On Jan. 29, the Waynesville JROTC Program went to Waynesville Middle School to recruit eighth graders to join the JROTC program their freshman year.
Recruiting trips provide cadets with an opportunity to show off the many different programs that the local JROTC Program has to offer such as the Drill, Color Guard, and Raider Teams.
“The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens; therefore, the mission to motivate the eighth graders to join JROTC was indeed successful,” says Mark Vanderson, Battalion Commander of the Tiger Battalion.
More than 400 eighth graders turned out for the event and many showed great interest and motivation to join not only the program, but to join the many clubs and programs the organization has to offer.
“The cadets put on an excellent, professional performance for the eighth graders”, says First Sergeant Hildenbrandt, JROTC instructor.
One of the main aspects the cadets most wanted to portray is the versatility of the program. Also, the cadets emphasized the many different kinds of students and citizens in Waynesville’s JROTC program: athletes, Student Government members, and many other members of all kinds of clubs and organizations.
“I believe the event went great. We got a lot of eighth graders motivated to join the program. I think we portrayed the JROTC program well, and I’m quite excited for the future of this program,” says Devonte Baity, Battalion XO (Executive Officer). “Demonstrating to the eighth graders everything our program has to offer – and how our program can benefit them academically and physically – helps get them interested in all of the opportunities JROTC has to offer them and their future.”
