In the first round of the Class 2 Girls State Tournament, the Crocker Lady Lions (27-2) advanced past Seymour (25-3) 63-57 to edge into the quarterfinals. For the first time since a Jan. 26 victory over Dora (62-52), Crocker allowed an opponent within 10 points before the final buzzer.
The Lady Lions began the night with a fast-paced offensive attack to produce a 19-point first quarter and took a 19-13 edge. Seymour was quick to battle back, holding Crocker to 13 second quarter points and netting 17 points of its own.
Still, Crocker held a slight two-point lead at the half, 32-30.
In the third period both defenses dominated, scoring a combined 22 points. But it was the Lady Lions who outscored the opponent 12-10 to push the lead to four points, 44-40 headed into the final stanza.
Seymour added another 17 points in the fourth, but Crocker outlasted them once again, posting another 19 points to win 63-57 and advance to the Class 2 State Quarterfinals.
Next up for Crocker is Crane on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. at Drury University.
Crane boasts a record of 27-3 and hasn't lost since Dec. 27, a 69-49 beat down by Republic. Crocker is riding a 17-game win streak into Saturday's contest.
