March 14, 1782
Senator Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton, born on March 14, 1782, was one of the first two US Senators from Missouri, and was the first Senator to serve five terms. Not to be confused with his great-nephew of the same name, Benton was an advocate of Manifest Destiny--a belief that the US was destined to expand across the continent. His nickname, "Old Bullion," referred to his opposition to paper currency. Benton died in Washington, DC, in 1858.
