Waynesville sixth graders Valentina Broussard, Isaiah Joseph, Xavier Jackson and Austin Bohlen competed in the first Missouri Regional Science Bowl on March 2 at the St. Louis Science Center Exploradome.
Coached by Tim Harrison, the sixth graders were among 22 teams from 14 different school districts from across the state competing in this academic buzzer competition.
The team participated in four rounds of head-to-head questions focused on life science, physical science, Earth and space science, energy, mathematics and general science. The Waynesville team won two of the four rounds with two of the wins coming at the expense of 8th grade teams.
Although the sixth graders missed making the top eight teams that move into the finals, they picked up some great experience for next year. Harrison, a sixth grade science teacher, looks forward to returning with this team next year and believes they will be able to make the finals. Finalists compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.
