  • CROCKER – A Wednesday night Frisco League girls soccer bout between the Laquey Lady Hornets and the Crocker Lady Lions was less about fundamentals and more about dealing with field conditions.
The sloppy, muddy mess at Crocker City Park presented many challenges, but as each team had student-athletes slipping and sliding in the muck, it was Crocker that prevailed 6-0.
"We try to start out at a fast pace each game," Crocker coach Kevin Zimmerman said, and his team did just that despite the "nice soft mud [which] provide extra entertainment."
Barely three minutes into the contest, Crocker's Jeanna Mendez (Sr.) snuck a goal by the Laquey goalkeeper to give her team an early lead.
From then on, Laquey seemingly had no answer as Crocker added three more goals in the first half, and two goals in the second to take home a 6-0 conference victory.
"Most of our game was controlled by our midfielders." Zimmerman said. "Their excellent play for the first two games is what has enabled our offense to score so easy and the defense to post shut outs."
Crocker, now 2-0, is scheduled to host Dixon on Monday at 4:30, and Zimmerman said the game will be no cake walk.
The Lady Lions' coach said Dixon has controlled Frisco League girls soccer for four years, but Zimmerman has hope his squad has improved in the two years since the program's inception.
"I expect a good close game with Dixon and a lot of work to be done on the field to get it ready again on Monday," Zimmerman said.
As for the Lady Hornets, coach Mike Podurgal's squad will travel to Fair Grove on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
Wednesday scoring summary: Crocker – Kayla Williams, 3 goals, 1 assist; Jeanna Mendez, 2 goals, 3 assists; Meagan Wall, 1 goal; Gerica Curry, 1 assist; Amber Denoyer (GK) second shutout of season.
