  • Wood Elementary’s Tumble-Wood team took first place in their division and the Pet Project Team won second place in their division in the state Odyssey of the Mind competition on March 23 at Rolla. In addition, the Pet Project Team scored enough points to receive a special invitation to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition.
The OotM World Finals will be held May 21-26 in Lansing, Mich, and are expected to draw more than 800 teams and 15,000 participants.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.
The competition has two parts: the long-term problem and a spontaneous problem that the team is presented with and must solve on-the-spot.
Pet Project team members include Nathan Sitton, Angelica Ramos, Madison Ketchem, Ku’uleilani Noa-Mokiao and Kaylah Brown. Parent volunteers are Tina Brown and Scott Sitton. The coaches are Candice West and June Sitton.
Tumble-Wood members are Angela Moore, Samantha Watkinson, Zyara Davis, Lee Hamlett, Briana Pullen and Chris Putman. The community volunteer is Tina Christenson. Their coach is Darlene Starner. The Tumble-Wood team won 1st place in their division.
Kaylah Brown was also selected to receive the OMER Award. The OMER Award is named for the Odyssey of the Mind raccoon mascot, OMER, in recognition of individuals or teams who demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior or exceptional talent.
