Winter guard is often called "the sport of the arts" because it combines the physicality of athletics with the dramatics and musicality of fine arts.
This is only the fourth year Waynesville has competed in a winter guard activity.
This year's show theme was based on the book, "The Butterfly Effect," by Andy Andrews. His idea is that every action affects another, which in turn affects another, and thus can change the world. The student performers use dance, flags, sabers and mock rifles to visually convey the story.
This year's team was comprised of nine freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors and four seniors -- Bianca Brown, Amanda Click, Shannon Norris and Kelcee Rowlett.
Guard members practice 6-10 hours per week and compete four times in a regional circuit against more than 25 other guards during the winter season. Guard at Waynesville is a rapidly growing program, which begins in the fall with the marching band guard and continues into the winter guard season.
