  • WAYNESVILLE – A struggling Tigers baseball team fell to an overall 1-10 season record before capturing two consecutive wins Saturday to earn the team's first Waynesville Tournament title since coach Scott Turner was placed at the helm of the program.
The Tigers squad saw spectacular pitching from Trent Simpson (Jr.) in Friday's 2-0 loss, but the team bounced back to pick up pitchers Ryan Pendleton (Fr.) and Trey Simpson (Fr.) in Saturday's wins, in which Waynesville outscored its two opponents by a combined 20-11.
"We had quality against a quality opponent [Oran], we didn't have two strike hitting whereas they did," Turner said after Friday's defeat.
In the tournament's first win "we got the bats going early," Turner said.
"We executed two hit-and-runs, a safety squeeze, and we stayed on the bases," he said. "We had a game plan coming in and we basically did that plan."
After racking up the team's first win streak with Saturday's second victory, Turner said "it's a good feeling, especially when our offense is on a roll."
