Ever since Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) kissed earlier this season, New Girl fans have been waiting for them to actually define their relationship. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, Cece's (Hannah Simone) wedding on Tuesday's season finale (9/8c on Fox) will be the catalyst for them to finally decide to be together - or not.
New Girl Postmortem: Are Nick and Jess ready to date?
"They're just trying to figure it out still," executive producer Liz Meriwether says of the season-ender, mysteriously dubbed "Elaine's Big Day." "In a way, that wedding will bring out a lot of emotions and feelings about love. They're struggling with their feelings about each other and trying to figure out what they mean and what to do about them."
Since their kiss, and subsequent romp in the sack, Nick and Jess have discovered just how different they really are, which will be one of the roadblocks in their way. Another one? Jess' father Bob Day (Rob Reiner). "Bob is not too fond of Nick so there's some of that going on," Meriwether says. "When your dad is not wild about the guy that you potentially like, there's something to think about there. Also, Nick Miller is not necessarily every girl's dream."
Still, Meriwether has been pleased by the fan reaction to Nick and Jess' relationship, which has been fun for the writers to map out this season. "We've been really enjoying the end of this season and telling the Nick-Jess story, so we feel pretty excited to keep telling that story," she says and adds that there will be a cliff-hanger in the season finale, which will also feature guest appearances by a horse, a beaver and Taylor Swift. Whether the cliff-hanger has to do with Nick and Jess or Cece's wedding remains to be seen, but Meriwether expects fans to have a strong reaction to the finale. "Luckily, I don't think anyone knows where I live," she says with a laugh.
Are New Girl's Nick and Jess the new Ross and Rachel?
On the actual wedding front, we'll see Schmidt (Max Greenfield) enlist the help of Winston (Lamorne Morris) to prevent Cece from getting married, "but it's for a different reason," Meriwether teases. "We've got a lot of tension of how Schmidt feels about it, if Cece's making the right decision, and it's obviously an arranged marriage. They don't know each other that well, and she's deciding if this is something that she wants in her life, if this is a road that she wants to go down."
If Schmidt is successful, he'll have a difficult decision since he recently reunited with former love Elizabeth (Merritt Wever). "We're seeing this other side of Schmidt or at least him trying to reconcile who he used to be with who he is now, which I think has been really fun and good for the character," Meriwether says. "Cece deciding to get married is pushing him to examine his own choices he's made romantically. I think it's a good arc for him as a character. It's a struggle."
Do you hope Nick and Jess get together?
New Girl's Season 2 finale airs Tuesday at 9/8c on Fox.
