  • In a ceremony Monday, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Harry L. Herron Chapter 49 was recognized as a Purple Heart Chapter by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Chapter 49 is the first DAV chapter to be recognized in this way nationwide.
The recognition comes from the chapter's support of and dedication to honoring and assisting wounded veterans of all branches of service.
Local Purple Heart recipients from the chapter and from Wounded Warriors were in attendance as a plaque and two flags were presented to the chapter.
The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers from all branches that have been wounded in combat. The Military Order of the Purple Heart's mission is to "foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families."
The Military Order of the Purple Heart has a service program that is intended to assist veterans, regardless of whether or not they have received a purple heart, with filing claims with the Veteran's Administration and receiving their benefits. The DAV also assists local veterans with these same issues.
Recognition of the Harry L. Herron Chapter by the Military Order of the Purple Heart was proudly accepted by the group with support from local politicians, family and members of the chapter, as well as Purple Heart recipients from Wounded Warriors.
