  • WAYNESVILLE – In the second week of its offseason football program, Waynesville High traveled to Lebanon, Mo. for a 7-on-7 session with Rolla and Lebanon on Monday.
Despite a hotly contested joint-practice period, Waynesville head coach Rick Vernon said, "We don't keep score."
"It's always competitive when we go out on the field." Vernon said. "All three teams – Lebanon, Rolla and us – we're just working on secondary coverages, and also offensive schemes that we want to run."
Back home at Slaughter Field younger offensive and defensive lineman worked to improve at their position.
The coach emphasized that most of his bruts will either play offense or defense, not both.
"We've got a set group that's working on defense and a set group on offense," Vernon said. "You're just getting so many more reps in whenever you don't quite have as many on offense or defense during practices."
As far as Monday's camp, "They got some good work in on their individual skills," Vernon said of his trench men.
"Football, from the beginning up to where it is now, has changed a lot, but it all will still go down to your offensive and defensive linemen."
Later this week Waynesville football student-athletes will travel to St. Louis for a set of scrimmage practices.
"This is a big week for us and a very busy week." Vernon said.
The school's football camp will last through this weekend for players grades nine through 12. Scrimmages are scheduled for Friday and Saturday for student-athletes grades 10 through 12.
A freshmen scrimmage with three St. Louis teams will also take place Saturday morning.
