Do you know how to properly dispose of a US flag? Many people don't know what to do with a flag that has seen its better days. Proper etiquette for the flag is to remove it when it looks faded or torn. It must be disposed of properly, too, not just thrown in the trash.
The Saint Robert American Legion, located on the North Outer Road, placed a metal flag box for ease of community flag disposal. The American Legion Riders Chapter of American Legion Post 331 installed a white with flag design metal mailbox-type container built and secured it in concrete at the parking lot entrance to the Legion Hall. The flag disposal box is easily accessible from the north outer road, is marked "For Flags Only" as not to confuse people that it is a federal mailbox.
The addition of this easy to use flag drop box provides a 24-hour a day, year-round location for people to dispose of their used flags properly.
Every year on Flag Day, June 14 the American Legion Post with the assistance of a local Boy Scout Troop performs a Flag Retirement Service and proper flag burning ceremony, taking care to dispose of our national colors with due respect and with honor.
The Flag Retirement Ceremony begins at 5:30 pm behind the American Legion Hall. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
