WAYNEVILLE – Before Tuesday's doubleheader with Rolla, Waynesville Warriors AA coach Scott Turner told his team to work toward drawing walks.
Within the first few innings, Waynesville batters did just that before timely hits gave the home team a 9-0 lead at the end of the third.
After Trey Simpson (So.) and Noah Ochoa (8th) singled in the top of the first, sophomore Ryan Pendleton looped a double down the left-field line for two RBIs, the first runs of the game.
Then a walk-single-walk series of attack loaded the bases before another two walks gave the Warriors two additional runs to take a 4-0 lead into the second.
Waynesville added two more runs in the bottom of the second, one on an Ethan Gatzemeyer (8th) RBI single and another on a passed ball, to jump ahead even further, 6-0.
By the time Rolla struck back, it was too late.
Waynesville finished by scoring five more runs and allowing only five in an 11-5 Game 1 victory.
Pendleton finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, and coupled his offense with 3.2 innings pitched, allowing three hits and two runs and earning three strikeouts in a win.
Gatzemeyer finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 1.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was much different.
After Waynesville took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first, Rolla added 13 combined runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and left with an easy 14-3 victory.
The Warriors tallied a mere three hits, two by Pendleton, in the loss.
Waynesville AA squared off with West Plains on Wednesday.
The team's AAA squad will take on Iberia at 6 p.m. Thursday.
