  • WAYNESVILLE – Beginning June 3, construction workers began removing an old low-water bridge located between Waynesville High and Waynesville Middle School on Old Highway H in the city.
The project, which will cost an estimated $190,000 to complete, will provide a more efficient drainage system in case of heavy rainfall and flooding.
In addition to flood prevention, the new bridge will impede the occurrence of erosion, which was previously a nuisance to the old low-water structure.
The new bridge was designed by Barton Engineering and is expected to withstand a 50-year flood. An accompanying sidewalk will allow pedestrians to avoid traffic.
Those seeking access to the Hull Valley and Mitchell Heights neighborhoods can use G.W. Lane Street, located north of Interstate 44.
The bridge is currently under construction and is approaching an early August completion deadline.
