WAYNESVILLE – Slaughter Field was loaded with Waynesville Tigers as more than 60 participated in Monday's individual-drill and conditioning football practice. After stretching and sprinting, the athletes broke into individual groups including lineman, defensive backs, quarterbacks, receivers and running backs.
Tasks included footwork drills, positioning drills, option exchange drills and route running drills, among others.
Upon conclusion, Tigers head coach Rick Vernon addressed his team's progress in a one-on-one session with the Daily Guide:
Did you have a fun July Fourth weekend?
Vernon: It was a good time off for everybody and I think it's really a good thing. Everybody can get away and get some free time, then come back fresh, like today, and then get ready to go now for the rest of the season.
The guys must be fresh; today had a good turnout of guys ready to play Tiger football.
Vernon: We've had a good turnout all the way through weightlifting, through the first part of summer and now starting in July. July is what we call more of a conditioning-type program where we work on a lot of plays and things, but also start working on conditioning so once we start practice we're ready to go.
There was some offensive pistol formation going on today. Is that going to be a new-look set this season?
Vernon: We've ran that for quite a long time so that was one of our drills we wanted to put in to really start getting our quarterback used to reading different positions, whether to keep [the ball] or hand it off. We'll put that concept into our team [practice] Thursday.
The read-option takes a smart quarterback to operate smoothly.
Vernon: In our offense you have to be pretty smart because you have to make pre-snap reads and then make quick, sudden reads whenever [you're in the option].
I know it's early, but what does the quarterback crop look like as of now?
Vernon: It is [early]. We have some different [players] in there right now working on the quarterback position. They've worked all through June also, so we'll work with them and the ones that probably don't end up being the starting quarterback, they'll have another position they'll probably work into.
Is the team excited to move to the new field?
Vernon: We are. Right now we're just staying down here getting everything accomplished down here. Then, whenever it's time to move [to the new field], we'll move up there and be ready to start a new tradition on top of the hill.
