  • A fire that started in a second-story bedroom of a Rolla residence Thursday morning has been ruled incendiary by the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office.
A fire marshal was on the scene Thursday at the home fire that was contained to the bedroom at 103 Steeplechase Road, just south of Soest Road on the east end of Rolla. There was smoke damage in the rest of the house.
The cause is unknown at this time.
No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported, according to Capt. Jeff Breen, of the City of Rolla Fire and Rescue.
Rolla Fire Chief Robert Williams said the fire marshal's office is taking the lead on the investigation. Assistant Fire Chief Ron Smith said the Rolla Police Department is also investigating.
"There's something there," Williams told The Rolla Daily News by phone Thursday. "There was an indication to believe that we made the right decision in calling the fire marshal's office."
Both Breen and Williams said after fire crews arrived, the fire was under control in about 10 minutes. The fire was reported around 6:18 a.m., the fire chief said.
Breen said heavy smoke and flames were reported coming from the home when firefighters arrived. About seven firefighters responded to the scene initially, Breen said.
Breen guessed that the fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
Anyone with information about the fire is encouraged to call the Missouri arson hotline at 1-800-392-7766.
