Five-person teams of military personnel will be pitted against five-person citizen teams at an event this Saturday that will benefit the Wounded Warrior Fund.

The event called “Hero’s Challenge” will take place this Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Fugitive Run Mud Obstacle Course, located off Highway 72, about six miles southeast of Rolla.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. with the first course starting at 10 a.m.

The course, owned by Rolla Police Chief Mark Kearse and his wife D'ettra, is located at an abandoned rock quarry that was recently converted into a obstacle course adventure with more than 100 obstacles, including multiple fences, climbing walls, mud pits, climbing ropes, water crossings and more.  

The Hero’s Challenge event includes a 3-mile course for individuals and groups. There also will be an afternoon race for individuals or five person teams on the half-mile sprint obstacle course,

Proceeds will benefit wounded warriors and their families from the Fort Leonard Wood and greater Missouri area.

Participants must be age 13 or older the day of the race, and participants 17 and younger must have a parental consent form signed at registration.

Rates for active duty and military dependents are $50 for the mud obstacle course, $20 for the sprint race or $60 for both events. A military ID must be shown at registration.

Rates for non-military members are $70 for the mud obstacle course, $30 for the sprint course or $90 for both events.

Admission for spectators is $5, with children age 9 and younger admitted for free. Parking is an additional $10.

After the event, a beach, water slide and swimming will be open to all attendees and racers. Food and drink will be available on site at reduced rates.

The band Special 20 will perform at 4 p.m.
