Waynesvile City Council passed an ordinance on Thursday authorizing financing to widen Highway 17 from Ichord Ave. to Highway T as a part of a long-term plan to improve the flow of traffic in the west Waynesville area.
In Thursday's Waynesville City Council meeting, the city passed an ordinance that authorizes the Mayor to execute a direct loan agreement and promissory note between City of Waynesville and Missouri Transportation Finance Corporation for the widening of Highway 17 to three lanes from Ichord Ave./ Route H to
The Waynesville City Council discussed that this project is helping encourage the growth for the community.
"To me, this is about looking to the future," she said. "We have thousands of people living on T Highway and there is going to be more, and hundreds of people who now live in Pioneer Ridge and the Brookview area and they can't get into the flow of traffic."
The City's plans also include adding a roundabout on the intersection of Highway 17 and T Highway, which passed in August. The intersection experiences heavy traffic flow, according to the city, during the morning and evening rush. There have been several accidents in the area in the last few years and MoDOT representatives said they believe a roundabout may help to solve this problem by slowing traffic down while keeping it moving.
