  • Several local businesses will be participating in Small Business Saturday tomorrow, a day dedicated to supporting merchants in the community and encouraging shoppers to spend their money locally.
This year, the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce has helped promote this event by purchasing advertising for the businesses participating.
"The chamber feels that it's very important to shop locally," Cecilia Murray, executive director of the Waynesville-St.Robert Chamber of Commerce said. "We are very proud of what the area has to offer, and we want to promote those businesses."
So far, 13 businesses are participating locally, according to the Chamber (see break-box for a list of businesses).
"We're very fortunate that there are are a lot of businesses participating," Murray said. "This is a way for us to showcase and highlight what is in the community."
This is the second year for the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber to participate in Small Business Saturday. In past years, the Chamber has promoted "It's All Here," a day dedicated to shopping locally as well.
This year, the Chamber also promoted Small Business Saturday through its Facebook page by giving away $25 gift cards to people who comment correctly to small-business related questions asked.
The Chamber is also having two contests to encourage small business shopping on Saturday. Bring your receipts from shopping at the participating businesses to the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce between Dec. 2- 5 for a chance to win an American Express gift card. The person who spends the most at participating businesses will also be rewarded with a gift card.
American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to promote small businesses during one of the most important weekends for shopping during the year. Last year, over 100 million people participated nationwide.
