The Laquey and Iberia high school girls' basketball teams and the Newburg and Stoutland boys posted victories on Saturday to begin play in the Frisco League Tournament at Laquey High School.
In the boys' bracket Saturday, eighth-seeded Stoutland toped ninth-seeded Laquey 51-41 in the play-in game while fourth-seeded Newburg whipped fifth-seeded Richland 56-34 in first-round action.
In the girls' bracket Saturday, eighth-seeded Iberia clipped ninth-seeded Richland 40-37 in the play-in game while fifth-seeded Laquey upended fourth-seeded Crocker 67-51 in first-round action.
In other girls' first-round games scheduled for Monday top-seeded Licking was to play Iberia, second-seeded Plato took on seventh-seeded Newburg and third-seeded Dixon met sixth-seeded Stoutland.
The tournament is to continue tonight at Laquey with boys' first-round games - top-seeded Iberia vs. Stoutland at 5 p.m., second-seeded Licking vs. seventh-seeded Plato at 6:30 p.m. and third-seeded Dixon vs. sixth-seeded Crocker at 8 p.m.
In Saturday's action:
Newburg 56, Richland 34: Sophomore guard Ryan Ward led the charge as the Newburg Wolves improved to 2-0 overall. Newburg led 17-12 after the first period and took a 35-25 halftime advantage. Newburg outscored the Richland Bears 12-4 in the third period to take a 47-29 cushion into the final quarter.
Ward scored a game-high 22 points and senior forward Kaleb Robinson added 16 for the Wolves.
Senior forward Jake Horton led Richland with 12 points.

Stoutland 51, Laquey 42: In the play-in game the Stoutland Tigers blew out to a 14-5 lead after the first period and was in control the rest of the way. Stoutland led 35-20 at halftime and went into the fourth quarter up 45-34.
Senior guard Tony Sein fired in 22 points and Hunter Barclay added 13 for the Tigers.
Junior forward Tony Crismon tallied 16 points and senior guard Jed York added 12 for the Laquey Hornets.

Senior guard Maura Skidmore took over in the second half, sparking the host Laquey Lady Hornets to a first-round win.
The game was tied at 12 after one period and at 28 at intermission. However, Laquey began to pull away in the third period, outscoring the Crocker Lady Lions 25-14 in the period and 14-9 in the fourth quarter.
Skidmore erupted for 38 points – 21 in the second half – to power Laquey while senior post Danielle Graves added 11 points.
All-state sophomore guard Lindsay Medlen led Crocker with 24 points while sophomore guard Kelsi York added 15.

Iberia 40, Richland 37: After a slow first quarter the Iberia Lady Rangers outscored the Richland Lady Bears 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 20-14 halftime lead. Iberia led 29-23 heading into the fourth period.
Senior guard Mikala Green netted 12 points and Faith Duncan added 10 for the Lady Rangers.
Sophomore guard Eleashea Fagre led Richland with 15 points.
