  • A strong first quarter was enough to allow the Dixon High School girls’ basketball team to post a 56-51 victory over Newburg Thursday in the Frisco League opener for both squads.
Dixon improves to 2-1 overall and Newburg is now 3-2.
The Dixon Lady Bulldogs fired out to a 20-12 lead after the first period and then held off the youth Lady Wolves.
Dixon led 32-25 at halftime and took a 42-36 edge into the fourth period. The Lady Bulldogs hit several free throws late to clinch the win. For the game Dixon hit 13-of-17 free throws.

Freshman guard Riley Guffey led Newburg with 15 points while junior forward Kelsey Austin added 10 points. Austin had nine rebounds while freshman forward Allyssa Dodlinger had seven for the Newburg Lady Wolves and Guffey had five steals and three assists.
“I thought our seasoned players played well the last five minutes of the game when Newburg was making a run at us,” said Dixon head coach Butch O’Riley. “Kelsey Ray made four big free throws in the last minute to close out the game.
“Newburg’s young players are a handful and played well throughout the game. Our two freshmen (Megan Gilbert and Madison Duncan) and two sophomores (Lexi Yoakum and Madison Eddleman) continue to contribute to our team’s success.”
Newburg is scheduled to play again Monday at Houston.
