The Waynesville High School boys’ basketball team drove a long way to compete in the Arvest Hoopfest, held at Rogers, Ark. High School.
Once there, the Tigers preceeded to shoot it from a long way.
Waynesville canned 10 three-pointers on its way to a 65-47 victory over Mt. Vernon, Mo. Thursday in the first round of the Rogers Hoopfest.
The Tigers, 2-0, were scheduled to play host Rogers Friday night in the semifinals. Rogers advanced Thursday by beating Pea Ridge, Ark. 51-31.
Depending on what Waynesville did in the semifinals, it was to play on Saturday at either 4:30 p.m. in the third-place game or 6 p.m. in the championship game.
On Thursday it was all Waynesville Tigers from the start.
The Tigers bolted from the gate by burying four 3-pointers in the first period to take a 22-10 advantage into the second quarter.
The Mt. Vernon Mountaineers, who finished 22-6 last season, outscored Waynesville 16-12 in the second period to cut their halftime deficit to 34-26.
However, 6-8 junior forward Juwan Morgan took over for the Tigers in the third period. Morgan fired in 11 points in the period as Waynesville stretched its lead to 51-39 entering the fourth quarter.
And 6-7 senior forward Kellieon Williams helped hold off any Mt. Vernon comeback hopes with a seven-point fourth quarter.
“I’m sure, like everybody else in southwest Missouri and northeast Arkansas, (because of the weather) we’re not in school and not having everybody in practice this week,” said Waynesville head coach Chris Pilz. “But I thought we played pretty well. Morgan played well and Kellieon, Jaron (Alexander) and Joe (Johnson) all hit a lot of threes. Overall we played well.”
Morgan finished with a game-high 27 points to power the Tigers. Williams had 14 points and Johnson, a sophomore guard, added 13.
Chandler Myers, a 6-4 junior forward, paced the Mountaineers, now 0-3, with 20 points.
