  • JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri transportation officials have suspended a cost-share program that has sped up the construction of some local road projects.
The state Highways and Transportation Commission says it has stopped accepting new applications in the cost-share program because of impending funding problems.
The commission also recently decided not to include any new major projects when updating its five-year construction plan.
Missouri's budget for road and bridge construction has fallen from about $1.3 billion several years ago to $685 million this year and is expected to be less than half that by 2017.
Under the cost-share program, the transportation department has accelerated particular road projects if local governments agree to cover part of the costs. One of the most prominent cost-share projects was the widening of U.S. 36.
