The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has released a video promoting school breakfast programs with Wood Elementary as its focus.
Wood Elementary on Fort Leonard Wood piloted the program, “Breakfast in the Classroom,” a program designed to make breakfast available to everyone – regardless of income level. Breakfast is served at the opening bell with students taking their food to the classroom – rather than a cafeteria – to eat it.
The video encourages other schools to take time each day to serve breakfast and to witness the program’s benefits, including increased breakfast participation, increased attendance, fewer complaints of students being hungry, fewer morning trips to the school nurse, decreased tardiness and improved building atmosphere.
As a result of the pilot program’s success at Wood, the Waynesville R-VI School District has expanded the program to all but one of its elementary schools.
