Local police will be out in full force this weekend as a part of the nationwide St. Patrick's Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunk driving throughout Waynesville from March 14-17.
Waynesville Chief of Police Dan Cordova said his officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught drunk driving.
“Every year, about 1/3 of motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more impaired drivers or motorcycle operators,” Cordova said.
Cordova said 218 people were killed and 666 were seriously injured on Missouri's roadways in accidents that involved one substance-impaired driver.
In 2013, 418 DWI arrests were made nationwide during the St. Patrick's Day holiday.
“By joining this nationwide campaign, we will make Waynesville's roadways safer for everyone throughout the holiday,” Cordova said.
