  • ASH GROVE, Mo. — After defeating Mansfield in the Ash Grove Gear-Up Tournament on Friday 6-4, the Waynesville Tigers (3-4) walked in on Saturday and took down the host Ash Grove Pirates 11-8.
On Monday, March 31, the Tigers played the Pirates in their second game of the tournament and was beaten badly, 8-1, but there were no such problems with offense on Saturday.
Every batter in the Waynesville lineup was able to get a hit, while Derek Wood, Shane Jewett and Trey Simpson all had a multiple hit game.
“Our offense came alive,” Waynesville coach Scott Turner said. “Collectively, we had 16 hits. It was nice to see the boys make the adjustments in their approach at the plate, and it paid off.”
Trey Simpson and Seth Hedrick were able to reach base on every one of their at-bats. Simpson had three hits and two walks while Hedrick had a two-run double and three walks.
The 11 points Waynesville put up against the Pirates are the most the Tigers have scored in a game so far this season.
Simpson also started the game on the mound. He threw five innings, gave up three hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out three. Simpson picked up the win.
Ryan Pendleton came in for Simpson in relief. He threw two innings, gave up three hits, four runs (also only two earned) and struck out two.
Defense was once again suspect for Waynesville as there were five errors that led to four runs.
A win, especially a tournament championship win, will make that easier to swallow though and Turner was able to let that pass for the time being.
“You don't have to be perfect in baseball to win,” he said.
Waynesville will be back at home on Tuesday with a varsity/junior varsity double header against Hillcrest. Varsity will start at 4:30 with the JV to follow.
