  • COLUMBIA — Rube Dowell knew his Waynesville golf team would have a tough time in Columbia at A.L. Gustin Golf Course since they would be one of the least experienced teams, but the knowledge they gained Monday was invaluable.
14 teams showed up to play and Waynesville was the team that brought up the rear, finishing with a team score of 430 — 45 strokes behind the next closest team.
Juniors Jacob Morriss and Wade Howser led the Tigers with scores of 87 and 88 respectively.
Freshman Fred Boone shot a 120 while senior James Richardson (in his first year of varsity play) had a 135 and freshman Dylan Reynolds came in at 145.
The tournament medalist was Matt Echelmeier of Rock Bridge who shot a 67. Rock Bridge was the tournament winner as a team as well.
Dowell said there will be plenty of things his team can take from the meet on Monday.
“I really feel the best lesson from this match was the premium we must place on hitting solid shots, sticking with a pre-shot routine and trying our best to execute our course strategy,” Dowell said. “On a number of occasions strokes could have been saved by all the players by taking a few seconds to think about all the available options on approach shots and putts once on the green.”
A.L. Gustin, Dowell said, does not present many flat lies on and off the green, therefore keeping the ball below the hole on the green is a must.
“It could mean the difference between two putts or four putts as some of them found out today.”
Team scores: Columbia Rock Bridge (A) 295, KC Rockhurst 310, Park Hill South 310, Columbia Rock Bridge (B) 330, Rolla 330, Jefferson City 331, Columbia Hickman (A) 339, Southern Boone 342, Kirksville 343, Columbia Hickman (B) 347, Columbia Battle 359, Sedalia Smith-Cotton 362, Camdenton Junior Varsity 385, Waynesville 430.
