Waynesville golf is accomplishing the simple, but difficult request of its coach: Improving.
SPRINGFIELD — Despite his team finishing ninth out of nine teams in Class 4 at Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course in Springfield on Thursday, Waynesville golf coach Rube Dowell was still excited.
Because his team improved.
It's a simple, yet difficult request and when a coach sees his team getting better as the season goes on it's a beautiful thing.
“I am starting to see the repetition of playing in front of people becoming a little less unnerving for these young players,” Dowell said. “Each admitted to being extremely nervous, but [Thursday] they dealt with the onlookers much better.”
On Wednesday during a team practice Dowell asked his team what a realistic goal would be for them on improving their scores from Monday when they played at Rock Bridge's meet. They came up with a five stroke improvement per man and a team score improvement of 20 strokes.
The Tigers cut 35 strokes from their team score on Thursday.
“We stille haven't beaten many team scores, but I am not seeing the other teams make the improvements we are in such a short time,” Dowell said. “I was really proud of my two freshman, Fred Boone and Dylan Reynolds.”
On Monday Boone shot a 120 while Reynolds carded a 145.
On Thursday Boone came back with a 104 and Reynolds shot a 116. That's an improvement of 16 and 29 strokes better respectively.
Wade Howser's 86 was the low round for the Tigers and Jacob Morriss wasn't far behind with an 89.
James Richardson also made a great improvement when he shot a 121, which was 14 strokes better than his score on Monday.
“As a new player, it is tough enough to hit quality shot after quality shot,” Dowell said. “Let alone having to prove they can make those shots with strangers watching them.”
Other scores in Class 4 for the Missouri State University Relays showcased Glendale carding a 304 for first place, Rockhurst 311, Kickapoo 322, Lebanon 323, Rolla 328, Parkview 337, Willard 349 and Central 382. Waynesville finished with a 395.
The Tigers will go to Rolla on Monday.
