  • Guided by the motto “Leave no veteran behind,” Pulaski County Veterans Court marked its first graduation this month.
Three veterans graduated from the structured and rigorous program.
Pastor Lindell Shelden opened the graduation with a prayer. Representative Steve Lynch spoke to the Veterans about their service and the work he had been doing to support Veterans.
The Pulaski County Veterans Court was established in 2013 to serve the growing number of veterans involved in the criminal justice system.
Judge Colin Long presided over the graduation. He remarked that our first President may have said it best, “The willingness with which our young people are willing to serve in any war no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation."
Participants in the program have served their Country honorably but have unfortunately left their combat experience suffering from either Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury.
Veteran’s Court differs from the traditional court process in that it involves a highly structured program monitored by an interdisciplinary team. This team consists of Judge Colin Long, Circuit Clerk Rachelle Beasley, Prosecutor Kevin Hillman, Law Enforcement, Probation and Parole and the Veteran’s Justice Outreach Officer Danielle Easter.
This court also engages the services of veteran mentors who have previously served in the Armed Forces and who adhere to the credo “leave no veteran behind.” Judge Long stated “I am grateful to the Veteran Mentors for their untiring efforts and dedication to the Veterans within the program”. The Pulaski County community has made great strides by being one of the first in the nation to recognize the need for a Veteran’s Treatment Court.
