A press release from the police department stated that the accident occurred on Ichord Avenue in front of Subway at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
The accident occurred when a PT Cruiser, driven by Smith, failed to yield to approaching southbound traffic and drove directly in front of an oncoming Chevrolet Venture, driven by 24-year-old Daniel Carpenter of Lebanon,  to impact the driver's side of the PT Cruiser, according to the Waynesville  Police Department.
A Wayneville Police Department  press release states that the PT Cruiser came to rest on the northbound shoulder of Ichord and the Chevrolet Venture came to a rest on the southbound lane of Ichord.
Both vehicles sustained moderate damage, according to the report.
Carpenter reported his head and right knee hurt, while the adult female passenger and small child reported no evident injuries, according to the Waynesville Police Department.
Smith was then transported to General Leonard Wood Hospital, due to “deteriorating medical conditions, which became evident in the minutes following the accident. “

Smith was later flown to St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday Smith passed away of a suspected inter-cranial hemorrhage.
