  • WAYNESVILLE — Another Waynesville athlete has signed her letter of intent and East Central College is getting another Tiger volleyball player.
Alyssa Arnold said what sold her on becoming a Falcon was coach Lisa Mathes-Peters and the promise of some early playing time.
“Coach came to a few of our games and I went to a few of theirs,” Arnold said. “I just really liked her coaching style. The opportunity to go on and play right away was a big factor too. I didn't want to have to sit for two years before I actually got to go on the court.”
Of course, it didn't hurt that she has the opportunity to take some of her nursing classes there either.
She's not sure though if she's going to do that right away or wait until she transfers to Maryville University in St. Louis.
As for continuing volleyball in St. Louis, she's unsure of that too.
“It just depends on how heavy the load is with clinicals, but I would like to,” Arnold said.
That's not important as her education though.
Arnold wants to stay focused on her schooling so she can fulfill her lifelong dream of taking care of children.
“I've just always had a passion for working with younger kids, but I didn't want to be a teacher, I wanted to be in the medical field.”
The only thing that has changed over the years is what she wanted to be exactly.
“I always wanted to be a pediatrician, but that's about 12 more years of school,” Arnold said. “Then I looked at Registered Nurses, that more meets what I want. I want to be in Labor and Delivery.”
Now, it's finally time to begin that journey to her dream job.
