Cole Garnette will take over for Butch O'Riley as the varsity and middle school girls basketball coach

DIXON — The Dixon R-1 schoolboard has recognized the retirement of Butch O'Riley as the girls basketball coach and has announced the hiring of Cole Garnette as the new high school and middle school basketball coach.

Garnette will also be a physical education and health instructor at the middle school.

Garnette was the Neelyville R-2 junior high boys coach and the assistant high school boys coach.

He graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas and received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 2012.

Superintendent Duane Doyle said Garnette has his priorities in order when it comes to basketball.

“Academics is first and athletics is second for his players,” Doyle said.

Doyle described Garnette as a very upbeat and uptempo individual and was straightforward when he was asked to describe they style of basketball his team will play.

“He said, 'I'm a defensive coach first and the offense will depend on the personel,'” Doyle recalled from the interview he had with Garnette.

Doyle said Dixon will miss O'Riley, who coached the Lady Bulldogs for the last three years.

“The knowledge and everything he brings to the game, his calm demeanor,” Doyle said. “He worked hard and tried to keep the girls motivated and had the will to win. He always got the most out of the personel he had given to him. That part will be missed.”

The Dixon Lady Bulldogs were 17-10 last season and lost in the second round of the Class 3 District 9 tournament.
