  • CARTHAGE — The local traveling softball team Mid-Missouri Evolution has returned from the Cleats 4 Cure in Carthage with numerous trophies after walloping the competition and placing three teams in championship games.
Coming off of a state championship weekend and a tournament win in Summer Smash, coach Jason Marcum’s top-ranked 16-and-under team went undefeated by outscoring opponents 67-15. Coach Stanley Crum’s 18U and Coach Vince Friend’s 14U teams returned home with runner-up trophies after playing in highly contested championship games.
Over the course of the weekend, 12 homeruns were hit tournament wide, and Evolution players hit 10 of them. Reese Weber hit three, Jordan Kane and Bailey Allen hit two each, and Shelby Friend, Lyndsay Reeves and Taylor Blattel each hit one.
“All four of our teams played well in Carthage. To come home with three trophies is no easy task. Our 18U team fell in the championship game to the defending World Series Champions,” said coach and organization head Marcum.
In winning another tournament championship, Coach Marcum’s 16U team went 5-0 on the weekend behind extremely hot bats, strong pitching and lights-out defense. Pitchers Lyndsi Vaughan and Delayne Patton each won two games in the circle, Jordan Kane made two highlight reel diving catches and line drives were jumping off of bats all weekend.
“We have won 39 games this year and never have we hit the ball like we did this past weekend,” Marcum said. “The hope is we are peaking at the right time in preparation for state and worlds. I was simply amazed with our hitters.”
The 18U, 16U and 14U team will play in the USSSA State Tournament next weekend in Independence, Missouri. Coach Loggins’ 13U team will play in a World Series preparation tournament in St. Louis. Teams will play in the World Series tournament in Florida and Kansas before holding assessments on August 2 for the 2014-2015 teams.
